Salutations

I am in a bit of a pickle, I have all these different combinations of NAME's coming into the system, and need to extract a salutation from them. but haven't found a way to do it so it gets them all. Here is a list of the different NAME's:

SAXTON, MIKE
GLORIA E SCHWAAB
SONJA JOHNSON
ROEPKE,DEANN LOUISE
NETTLES,RONALD
FLOISTAD, JOHN ALAN
SHARFF,CAROLE J

A H HERMEL CO
KENT'S KAR'S
SUMMIT MOTORS COMPANY
. TEDS SERVICE
0 PEDRO CAFE
AUTOMOTIVE RENTALS INC
THE PROCTER & GAMBLE DIST CO
PROJECT CHILDSAFE
KUEHN RENTAL,LLC

I have been using these but the include the middle names, and if it's a company they don't come correctly.

$nameStr = $row1["CUSTOMERNAME"];
list($firstPart,$secondPart)=explode(',', $nameStr);

$nameStr = $row1["CUSTOMERNAME"];
list($firstPart,$secondPart)=explode(' ', $nameStr);

what are you trying to do? Are you trying to re-form the names, or define what the salutation should be? What is your expected result (with example) and what is actually happening?

THis is what I want to get:

What I really want to do is, make sure the middle name doesn't show up.

Actually, a salutation is "Dear Madam", "Dear John", "To Whom It May Concern", etc.

"Sincerely" and the others are "complimentary closings".

But that is what I am tring to do, but adding the Dear in front of it is not my problem. Are you just trying to be a smartass or can you actually provide me with some help.

Well, use [man]substr/man and [man]strpos/man to find the first space in the name (if there is one), and trim from 0 to that spot. Something like:

$name = 'Gloria E';
$name = substr($name, 0, strpos($name, ' '));
echo $name;
// Gloria
?>

A more sure-fire way is this:

$name = $_row1['CUSTOMERNAME'];
// If the name is in the form: Last, First Middle
if(strpos($name, ','))
{
	// We'll extract just the first name
	$names = explode(",", $name);
	// And remove trailing spaces
	$name = trim($names[1]);
}
// If there is a space in the name (denoting that we have a middle name/initial
if(strpos($name, ' '))
{
	// Get only the first name, and leave the rest.
	$name = substr($name, 0, strpos($name, ' '));
}

echo $name;
?>

Thanks for the help that worked for the People's Names, do you have any idea what I can do for the business's. I don't have any qualifier's that would depick wether it is a business or person, all I have is this.

Unless you have a flag that delimits businesses from people, it's a bit tough to do.
