data from DB into a select

HI folks,

ok i need to get multiple lots of data from a database where there are lots of reuslts that match the year and month
ie 2005 has 10 results and December has 20 results

what im not sure how to do is to limit the results so it only shows

Yr
2005 -> 10
December ->20

and not:
Yr
2005
2005
2005
....

Anyone any ideas on how the best way to achieve this is?

You want to output the number of results? Doesn't mysql_num_rows() do that for you? Or have I misunderstood your question?

basically i want to display a list of the years that match a result (in drop down menu).

but only have one of each year.
