Converting from PHP5 to PHP4

Hi,

I am new to all this but have written a simple quotation system that runs on my IIS server I've set up at home running PHP5 and mySQL5 and all is working fine.

The problem I have had is that I didn't realise that most hosts, like the one I am registered with, are still running PHP4 and mySQL4 and nothing works.

How difficult will it be to downgrade my code?? It is using functions and is object oriented. As it is my first time I am not even sure if I have set up the SQL server correctly, but I think I have. I can send you all the files if neccessary - but I doubt someone else would like to work through them...

Any help would be greatly appreciated and I will continue to thank you in later years when I still have hair!!

It's not difficult. Here's what I'd do:

1.) Upload the files to the server
2.) Try and open them.

WHen errors pop up, go in the files and fix them. PHP4 doesn't handle OOP as well as PHP5, so you have to be careful when doing "private" or "public" and such, but everything else should be a quick fix.

I did that before and changed some of the connection string stuff like mysqli to mysql_connect and so on as I saw the errors. But I still don't seem to be able to connect to my database. How do I check if my connection string is correct - the bit that goes mysql_connect ('www.domainname.com', 'username', 'password')?

Could my problem be equally to do with the version of mySQL that i have written the database in?? It seemed to upload ok. I guess I just don't know where my problem lies - in the php, the sql or the way i've uploaded and setup it up. My guess is probably everything...

You don't connect to domain.com, you connect to the mySQL server. So on most hosts your connection string should be:

$conn = mysql_connec('localhost', 'user', 'pass);

The queries might give you a problem if you use newer mySQL functions. OTher than that, you should be fine. Most of your problems will be in your code.

now it says:

Warning: mysql_connect(): Can't connect to MySQL server on 'localhost' (10061)

I used to have an IP address in there not a domain name. Also - am I supposed to leave the trailing ' off after the password or was that a typo?

Missing the final "'" was a typo on my part. It is required.

Okay, so re-plug the IP address in the host part, and we'll go from there. Also, modify it so it says:

$conn = mysql_connect('IP_ADDRESS', 'user', 'pass') or die(mysql_error());

ok, my code now goes:

$result = mysql_connect('213.171.218.234', 'username', 'password') or die(mysql_error());
if (!$result)
return false;
// $result->autocommit(TRUE);
return $result;
}

It does not kick up any errors but it does not show and of the database contents.

also is there an alternative for the

$result->autocommit(TRUE);
$result->autocommit(FALSE);

lines as I have had to quote these out and I don't know how this will affect the code.

What does the auto-commit function do? Not sure what it does, so I can't tell you.

As for not showing results, you're not querying, so there are no results to display!!

The autocommit false statement means that each statement you execute is not immediately written to the database. But, I will ignore the autocommit thing for now - it may not cause problems for me anyway.

I do have plenty of queries just not on the actual index.php file, sorry about that - not very clear. Is there a way I could send you the admin area username and password? If so I can give em to you to have a look around there. You can try to select either the desktop or the laptop from index.php and that takes you into the show categories pages which are written using queries to categories and products tables.

If I can get all of this working I will be soooooooo happy....
