adding results from a database

in currently getting the following:

Y:2005/49/4539/2
Y:2005/50/4539/2
Y:2005/51/4539/7

from my database and i want to add up some of the values

what is the best way to go about doing this, so i can output a total for the month

Not the clearest of questions, but it sounds like the data is not being stored too well; otherwise a simple SUM() in the query would be sufficient.

sorry. ill try to explain, had a long day yesterday

All the above are different fields in the Database.

i want to add the total of some of the colums for certain results.

so.
id --- results --- against ---- for ---- week
1 --- 16 - - -- 16 ---- 5 ---- 49
2 --- 5 - --- 13 ---- 5 ---- 49
3 --- 10 ---- 11 ---- 5 ----49

I want to add the totals for this user in this week (ie wk49)
and add the results to each other, teh against and the for to each other
so, results (16+5+10)
against(16+13+11)
and
for (5+5+5)

Does that explain it a bit more?

I assume you have a SQL statement for retrieving the result already. You just need another statement to get the total

try

$res = mysql_query("select sum(results) as total_results, sum(against) as total_against from table_result");

if ($row=mysql_fetch_object($res)) {
echo $row['total_results'];
echo $row['total_against'];
}

Assume that the column name you want the total is "results", and the table name is "table_result".

i have managed to get all the results i need into an array

ie:
0 = 4539
1 = 4539
2 = 2003

my problem now is trying to use this array with a maths sum.
would i want array_walk?
