Help needed with extended functionality for shopping cart

I need a shopping cart that will cater for special offers such as "Buy one get one free" and "3 for 2".

The cart needs to do all the hard work. If I add 2 of product Y to the cart and product Y is included in a "buy one get one free" offer it should realise that it should add one at full price and one for free -

    1 x Y @ norm price

and
1 x Y @ free

if I now increase the quantity for either of these the cart should again figure out what it needs to do - increase 2nd instance to quantity of 6 so we now have a total of 7 x Y -

    1 x Y @ norm price

and
6 x Y @ free

on update the cart should change this to -

    4 x Y @ norm price

and
3 x Y @ free

I have made a couple of attempts at this but don't seem to be able to get my head around it, so I would really appreciate some help with the initial design. Any attempts, pointers or even just pseudo code would be great.

Its a opensource Open Source online shop, to your need, it support discount prices. I have't tried to create buy 1 get 1 free offer, but I believe that can be done.

I was thinking you can create buy 1 get 1 free by make a 50% discount, but it won't work, since the actual meaning is buy 2 get the price of 1, so not always 50% discount, only when quantity is an even number.

You can create another product for the offer, that contains what ever your offer is, e.g. 2 x Goods @ price of 1, in the detail of the product explain what the offer is.

Thanks for your suggestion but osc is not quite up to the job, and unfortunately due to the nature of it's chaotic source code it would be a nightmare to try to implement this functionality.

I was hoping someone may have implemented a cart like this and might be able to help with some pseudo code.
