Activate an item and deactivate the current active one

I have a table with some items in it. Only one of them is active. On a page I display them all and you can click to activate one, the id of that one to activates is posted.

What's the best way to activate that one and to deactivate the current active one?

Now I use three queries: look up the current active one, deactivate it, activate the new one.
I think there is a better way to do this.

If you have only one to active, then you can skip the search. Just:

UPDATE table SET active='0' WHERE active='1'

UPDATE table SET active='1' WHERE id='$id'

If only one item is active at one specific time, I think the way you are using is ok... but I the data base is too large, or if you have multiple users doing this at the same time you may find some problems, so maybe you could use Sessions ($_SESSION['value']) to get all the information from the Database that you need, then register all the changes that users make and finally update the database with the data that you need. I don't know if this is what you was looking...sorry if this don't help
