Memory usage is double on 64bit systems?

I have recently installed PHP 5.0.4 + Apache 2.0.54 on an Dual Xeon 3.8 IBM 346 server with OpenSUSE 10. I used the 64bit versions of the original RPMs. When trying to migrate a site to the new installation, i have noticed that the memory usage reported by memory_get_usage() is double! Is this a normal behavior?

I havn't any experiece with 64bit systems, I only followed the SUSE installer recommandation to install the 64bit version of the software.

Did you install the exact apps on the 64 bit system as you did on your 32 bit machine?

It is not clear what you mean by memory usage. Memory used by linux, or php scripts?

BTW, no matter how much memory you have on a linux box, eventually linux will gobble it all up, due to caching for faster access. What you probably should worry about is if your machine is using swap memory. Run top.

I think this is a question for a linux forum though.
