select case statement in odbc query

hi,
i am attempting to write a complex query which requires a case statement. The query is put together as a string in php before being passed to access ( :bemused: clients choice) with odbc_exec(). However, the addition of the case statement throws up a syntax error. I have checked the syntax against ms's support pages and several other sites on the net to no avail.

Am I mistaken in thinking that such complex queries can be used in this way. Having used IIF statements before I assumed they can and have found no documentation to suggest otherwise.

Any help will be gratefully recieved as would suggestions of a better method for this.

OK, take the query, right before you toss it at the database in the code, and print it out to the browser, then cut and paste that and run it by hand.

yes, but since the point is to write an automatic report....

I have also found that I cant reassign existing variables eg

field1/field2 AS newfield
newfield = newfield*15

so ive had to use:

field1/field2 AS newfield
newfield*15 AS anothernewfield

This in a way detracts from the reason for me writing the code this way which was readability. Ho hum.

Are such things impossible in a scripted query or am I simply misguided ( :p )...
