Hello, I am doing some research into obfuscating some code.

I'd appreciate if you posted any information about the best free php obfuscator that works either web-based or (if it is a software) runs on mac os x

Zend --> www.zend.com
IonCube --> www.ioncube.com

Both obfuscators... both require different "engines" to interpret....
