[RESOLVED] Regular expresions

Hello!

I'm using a regular expresion for the first time and it does not seem to be working.
What I need to do is find the name of a .jpg file in $rdf

I have tried this but does not seem to work.

if(preg_match('/.+jpg /', $rdf)){
	$rdf_orig_name = preg_match('/.+jpg /', $rdf);
	echo $rdf_orig_name;
	}	else	{
	echo "I couldn't find it!";
	}
?>

This always echos "I couldn't find it!" but when I echo $rdf I can see that it contains FAY#1.jpg

Well, if you want to see if it's there, use [man]eregi/man. If you want to get the filename (or other parts of the name) use [man]preg_match/man

$eregpattern = "^[-a-zA-Z_0-9'\"\[\]()]+.jpg$";
if(eregi($eregpattern, $rdf))
{
  $rdf_orig_name = eregi($eregpattern, $rdf);
  echo $rdf_orig_name;

  echo "I couldn't find it!";
}

/**
 *  PREG Example
 */
$pregpattern = "@([\w\-\[\]\(\)])+\.jpg@i";
preg_match($pregpattern, $rdf, $matches);
if(!empty($matches))
{
  echo $matches[1];
}
else
{
  echo 'I could not find it!';
}

Yes most of that does makes sense. Although I'll have to look into the characters in $pregpattern to fully understand it.

Anyway, I want to get the file name and the code that you sent still does not find the file name.

$rdf is a multidimensional array and I have know idea where in the array the file name is. Could that be part of the problem and do you think I'm going the right way about getting this data?

if it's in an array, you need to loop through the array and find whatever value matches that pattern.....

That was my first thought and I looped through the first level but could not find it.
I then stated to try and figure out how to loop through multiple levels but got nowhere fast!

First I used print_r which returned

along with a bunch of other similar information. But nothing that gave me any idea of the array structure.

I was then trying something like

for ($i = 0; $i<50000; $i++){
$rdf_loc = $rdf[$i][$ii]['Text Value']					
if ($rdf_loc == "Fay#1.jpg")	{
	echo "it's here" . " ". $i . " " . $ii;
	}else { for ($ii = 0, $ii<50000, $ii++)					} if ($rdf_loc == "Fay#1.jpg")	{
	echo "it's here" . " ". $i . " " . $ii;
} else {	echo "I can't find it!!";
	}

But I was totally guessing and found that this was really really good at returning syntax errors!

how about:

function loop_array($array)
{
  foreach($array as $a)
  {
    if(is_array($a))
    {
      loop_array($a);
    }
    else
    {
      if(eregi("^[-a-zA-Z_0-9'\"\[\]()]+.jpg$", $a, $regs))
      {
        var_dump($regs);
      }
    }
  }
}

$myarray = array();
loop_array($myarray);

Would that work?

Unfortunatly that didn't do it. But I'm almost there with this

$imploded_rdf = implode($rdf);

$pregpattern = "@([\w\-\[\]\(\)])+\.jpg@i"; 

echo $matches[0]
?>

This returns "1.jpg" instead of FAY#1.jpg

How do I change the code so that it returns the full file name ?

\w looks for word chracters, but # is a non-word character.
