If varbile is not null !!!!????

hello there,
i am indeed relativly new to this php, but learning quick, and having lots of fun in the process, but ive been stumped here.
All i need is the syntax for a null requirement in an if statement, ive tried all sorts, with no luck. So i have.....

If ($row_nicheresults['Region'].... then i need does not equal a null value.

Firstly, does this makes sense!?
And secondly, can anyone help!!?

if ($var === NULL)
{
    echo "You nullster";
}

// not null test

if ($var !== NULL)
{
    echo "You're not as null as you look";
}

Notice the triple = and the double after the not (!). Otherwise zero or an empty string would match if you just used the 'soft' test of ==

Or you could use is_null()
