Time addition

Hi guys,

Bit of background into: I'm currently working on an electronic job bag system for a design agency - when one of the guys/gals in the studio completes a job they then add their hours to the MySQL database.

The problem: What I'm having difficulty with is totaling up the hours once a job is then complete. Ideally I'd like something like the following:

01:45

00:05

01:50

The fields I have in the table are as follows:

progress_id, job_id, name, description, hours, minutes

Any help would be greatfully recived - thanks in advance!

UPDATE tablename SET hours=hours+3, minutes=minutes+15 WHERE name =$name

The problem you have is that you will need to be able to query the database first and if adding to minutes will change the hours, for example if the had 4 hours and 45 minutes you need to build a function that would set to zero any number 60 or over and add an hour in the hour field (column) But the UPDATE above would do what you are wanting to do.

Your overcomplicating things.

Just have a minutes column (so your always adding to that), and then when rendering the hours totaled up, you can just divide/mod by 60 to get the required figures from your raw number.

Here's the solution to update a time that I just found on another site.
Make a column with the data type TIME which will store values in the forum 00:00:00 - 99:59:59 OK suppose you want to now update this column, lets call it hours

Your query would look like this.

UPDATE tablename SET hours = sec_to_time(time_to_sec(hours)+time_to_sec('02:30:00'))

So drop the minutes and hours and just make a new one hours or time_apent
and use the TIME data type (no length required)

'time_spent' time,

would be all you need to set that field up for the table, try making a new table and try out the query and of course you could use the WHERE clause for either an ID or employee name to update individual records.
