how to combine transparent images into a single image?

hi
i have a number of face component images for eyes, nose, ear, mouth etc for emoticon. nd need to place them one above another to create the face,
pls tell how can i combine them with transperency?
i am planning to use imagecopyresampled() but not able to combine the images with transperency..
