How do I start?

I have a client here in Houston that has asked me to help with maintaining a web app that is scripted in php.

I have never done php before so I am trying to figure this out. When I open one of the php files the code is garbbled. It looks like it has been compiled.

What files should I be looking at inorder to view the code?

Sounds like it may have been encrypted. Php is generally just plain text and cannot be compiled. However, there are certain encryption systems around to obfiscate code. Did your client pay someone to create this site? And if so, did there liscence include them having the rights to the source?
