I am primarily a non-net based application designer, though I have experience using MySQL for an emulator project.
My friend and I have been planning for quite some time now a business venture and it requires obviously a web-page but more importantly a particular web-based service. We have know skillset to develop web-applications/features and thus I came here after learning some of the possibilities because I feel PHP is versatile enough to meet my plans demands, however!! I am in search of people familiar with this realms opinions as to various languages or tools to use for certain features. I don't need to know how to do it, just thoughts on what would be the most efficient for speed and useability. Here's what we're planning now:
An auction system similar to ebay but for a very specific market and a much smaller community of specialists. basically the user may do the following:
-Log in under and accout name (needs to be secure)
-this gives them access to place/make bids + setup auctions
-The payment system however will be an exchange system so no monetary handling needs to be factored in. The final decision on the bid is based on an approval rating by the person putting the auction up. Thus the auction holder needs to have the ability to close the auction out.
-Users must be able to see what auctions are available via a search function, having options like: by time left, by item name, by seller, by approval ranking
-After an auction is closed the person who won, must supply a rating 1-10 or a similar system and optional comments to the person holding the auction.
-As far as account permissions are concerned. Auction holders must have the ability to upload photos of items for sale.
-People reading profiles of sellers must be able to see their total sales, their ranking and the newest comments.
These are the basic features thus far we've decided on attempting. No doubt they're *****ious but we're trying to asses what skillsets we will need to accomplish this feat. Any insight into this would be much appreciated. I've looked into several languages/tools and all seem capable of most of these features, however I'm looking for opinions as to the most versatile/easy to update/fastest ones out there before I invest the time in learning them!!
