i realize it's the "um-teen-thousandth time" it's been asked (i saw when i searched), but i'm still looking for a little advice from someone who may have dabbled in something from either hotscripts, or ventured to write their own.
as part of this site i'm building as a charity for a local arts-in-education organization, (Drakla, you've already helped me with the navigation component) i want to give the Director (the Organization Head) the ability to simply add the following:
Periodic News Article Title
TEXT of the article
Author -- which can be easy because it can just be her-- one person w/ possible upgrade to 2 or 3, but totally no need for a "registration system"
Image option
i realize this is difficult to advise because what i'm looking for is something relatively "easy", and rather non-descript. but, i just have a few brief concerns listed below that perhaps you know of a good tutorial to get me going.
what i'm saying is, of course-- i realize there are a ton of 'em pre-made-- heck, i could just install WordPress-- but she doesn't need that (or want it), and i'd NEVER get her to learn to administer it-- way too complicated. this needs to be two, three clicks max type thing, i think-- more like sending an e-mail, and i think it can be done. i've done similar such things before for my own little "comments" section-- although not as integrated into a site in such a way that it is expected to accomodate weekly updates, allow for a picture(s), etc-- but i'm sure that combining my knowledge of html, css, and php, i can build a basic "bulletin board" type component for this site.
what really landed me here with this inquire are my concerns in regard to the following issues.
How might i handle the tasks of:
Sorting a display of pre-determined number of articles per page during the output / data view -- the default public view, of course
Image management
administrative login (for let's say 2 users, plus me-- so 3 total)
am i leaving anything out?
so, knowing that, do any tutorials on-line come to mind that you're aware of? recommended places i do some article browsing?
regarding the sorted output, i can probably get a good start from WeedPacket's thread on dynamic table population-- at least a reference-- but i don't want it to end up looking too much like a grid of cells-- i'd like to use CSS as much as possible!
i already started to do it from scratch, built my database, started on the pages and it occurred to me that i should at least consult the friendly folks at PHPBuilder.com.
i'm sure y'all tons of ideas to point me in the right direction. remember-- i don't want to go the pre-packaged route-- primarily because i'm afraid of the difficulty in teaching this person to use it, and furthermore-- it would likely take me more time to "dumb-it-down" for their site than it would be to build my own from scratch.
