Silly question: What is '#'?

here is what I'm sure is a basic question ... but I have seen some code with the '#' character used quite a lot and I was just wondering what it did?

For example:

#print_r($HTTP_POST_FILES);
#$sup_id = $SESSION[sup_id];
#print_r($SESSION);

It's not something like a commenting symbol, is it?

It's a "Unix shell-style (Perl style)" comment starter.

AKA "hash", "sh{e}" (as in "shbang" (#!/usr/local/bin/perl)) ... etc., etc.

In this case, looks as if they left in the "DEBUG" code, just commented it out.

Other PHP comment delimiters are:

//this is a comment.

/* And so is this, and
this, and this, too...   */
