They're backslashes.
Backslashes are legal in URLs, and browsers behaving correctly will fetch URLs with backslashes in.
Backslashes are not the same as forward slashes.
HOWEVER, MSIE assumes that any URL with a backslash in is incorrect and changes it to a forward slash. This behaviour is unreasonable, but it does it anyway.
Firefox of course, simply tries to get the images on their correct URLs, and fails. Look at your web server log.
The bottom line:
- Don't have URLs with backslashes in (Breaks in MSIE).
- Never reference URLs with backslashes in that don't exist and expect the browser to "magically" change them to forward slashes.
