[RESOLVED] Images not displayed in Firefox

Hi people,

Here's my problem: Some of my images are not displayed in Firefox.
When i click on properties for the path i can see that slash (/) is replaced with %5C. Anybody knows why? Thanks in advance!

Are they displayed correctly in other browsers? If your path names are being changed to URL-format, then it sounds to me like your path names are in a DB and some sort of unwanted URL-formatting is taking place on extraction of the paths from the DB - or something similar. Perhaps it's a 'slash escape' problem.

If that's the case, then the browser is irrelevant.

I have tested it in Explorer and Opera and there's no problem. As you guessed, the path names are retrieved from a db but most of the images are fine. Only a few images are not displayed because it changes / to %5C.

Why only a few images have this problem and not all of them? And what exactly is a 'slash escape' problem?

They're backslashes.

Backslashes are legal in URLs, and browsers behaving correctly will fetch URLs with backslashes in.

Backslashes are not the same as forward slashes.

HOWEVER, MSIE assumes that any URL with a backslash in is incorrect and changes it to a forward slash. This behaviour is unreasonable, but it does it anyway.

Firefox of course, simply tries to get the images on their correct URLs, and fails. Look at your web server log.

The bottom line:

Don't have URLs with backslashes in (Breaks in MSIE).
Never reference URLs with backslashes in that don't exist and expect the browser to "magically" change them to forward slashes.

Install IE 😃
...to tell you the truth I've worked with Firefox a while, and yes it has some advantages but... I still prefer IE

I have no problem using IE, however it's not about me, it's about visitors that using Firefox! 🙂

Well, yeah, but there's an inconsistency here in that %5C is the urlencoded form of '\'

Not on MSIE, but on your own website by using (or ensuring the correct formatting of) the correct path segment separators. This could mean just parsing backslashes to forward slashes before output to the browser, but then that would prevent legitimate backslashes from being used.

Yes. Stop using backslashes instead of forward slashes in your URL references. It's a bug in IE which enables this to "work". It's not a bug in Firefox which stops it.
