field name modification in frontend

hi for a particular condition my select box(multiple) has a mid and if i select one option from previous field the mid name should change to sid and this is because i am displaying the value in the query like mid

how can i do this

(oops i forgot to put punctuation when i am posting my question)
my select box name is mid,
for a particular condition mid should be changed to sid

for example
if (p=1)
mid
if(p=2)
mid should be replaced to sid
and populated with sid data

this is only for particular execution only.

i dont want to create another field for this and populate my multiple select box

I think I got it -- like...

if($a == 1)
{
   $formName = "mid";
}
else
}
   $formName = "sid";
}

?>

<form action=whatever.php method=post>
<select name=<?= $formName; ?>>
   <option>First</option>
</select>
