What do I chmod to (to use fopen, fwrite)

Hello,

I was trying to open and edit a file usting fopen, fwrite commands.

However, I got a permission denied error.

I chmodded the main folder and the file itself to drwxr-xr-x but then I got a forbidden error for everything in the folder and such.

chmod("/var/www/html/site/website/index.html", "drwxr-xr-x");
chmod("/var/www/html/site/website", "drwxr-xr-x");
chmod("/var/www/html/site/", "drwxr-xr-x");

What should I chmod to? I think the number is 775? So chmod it as "0775"?

From the PHP manual chmod function:
The current user is the user under which PHP runs. It is probably not the same user you use for normal shell or FTP access. The mode can be changed only by user who owns the file on most systems.

If you can't get chmod to work then you can try to use ftp to change permissions on the files.

Gotta try it with the right argument first -- the string permission set shouldn't work -- gotta use the octal number.

I chmoded the file that will be accessing the folder that it's in to 0777.

chmod("/var/www/html/site/website/index.php", "0777");
?>

However, when index.php tries to access

/var/www/html/site/website/

I get:
Can't open folder (/var/www/html/site/website/)!

Should I also chmod the /website/ dir?
