Help please

Hi this is my first time ever really working with php before. I am currently trying to open a webcomic page and I can't seem to get this coding I downloaded to work. I got it from this page: http://www.designmeme.com/2005/05/26/comic-gallery-tutorial/

Can someone please help me? The page will come up but none of the comic or navigation buttons are showing up for me. Eeep.

Do you have a web server on your local PC, and does it have PHP installed? If not do you have a web site and if so does the server support PHP? PHP must run on a web server because it is a server side script that must be interpreted by the server, if you don't have a server on your home PC it won't work. PHP can generated HTML which is what your browser displays, but in order to output HMTL or anything useful it must be run on a server.

:queasy: To be totally honest with you, I have no idea what you just said means. I am trying to host it on freewebs.com

I have been able to view other sites that have this type of thing on it. How do I find out if the site supports php? I don't think I have a server. Sorry, I really don't know any of this stuff. feels embarrassed

OK, I take it that you do not have a web server, but you do have a place that you can use on the web. Can you upload files to that site with and FTP client? If you can then you should have some space on that server that you can use. If you can upload files to the server let us know if not and you would still like to use the program that I have put on my local machines web server and tested and it does work then all you need to do is set up a server on your local PC and you can use it also.

I would suggest that you download either XAMPP or WAMP or TRIAD all of shich will set up a server with PHP and MySQL on your home PC, then you would just place the folders on your server and type in http://localhost/comicgallery.php and you will see the comics that that program creates, and if you add more images to the images folder it will show those also.

Just do a search for XAMPP or WAMP or TRIAD and download the version for your machine (I would suggest an installation version if you have windows) and run the install and ten minutes later you have a web server at home to test PHP or HTML and MySQL programs out, plus you can then use and learn to modify the files that you have already downloaded.

What about MySQL, MSACCESS, and PHP?
Unfortunately, Freewebs does not offer these functions.

Ok so I downloaded TRIAD and I kind've think I got it. How do I put the comicindex.php into an html document so it's viewable on a page? Like an Iframe or something maybe? Do you know any (preferably free, or really inexpensive) webhost that supports php? And when I have it up, will other people be able to view the php or do they need to do something?

OK now you have a web server that supports PHP, just start your server if it doesn't start when windows starts. Now your server which is apache will have a special folder where it keeps all the pages that it serves to users and can usually have the name either htdocs or just plain www.

To test your server in the address bar of either Windows or your browser type http://127.0.0.1/ or http://localhost/ and it should show you a welcome page telling you that your server install was successful or something along those lines. You might need to look at the help file that came with Triad to know what name it uses for its web documents.

When you find out where the server files are supposed to be stored, then take the unzipped folders and files that were contained in the comic gallery zip that you downloaded and copy them all to that folder for the server. There are three folders (cg_nav, lubrick and images) and there are three files (comicgallery.php, example.php and lubrick.css) When you have placed those files on your server just enter into the address bar http://127.0.0.1/comicgallery.php and it will run the php program, or you could type http://localhost/comicgallery.php and see the same thing to view the example just type http://localhost/example.php to see what it does.

For free 100 Megabyte of storage with PHP and MySQL support with no ads or posting requirements go to http://dhost.info/ and signup for a free web hosting account. Or you can get the same thing but with 150 Megabyte webspace email accounts and unlimited MySQL databases as well as cPanel with Fantastico at http://astahost.com/ .With astahost you must post for credits to get the webspace and must continue to post messages to keep your free website or it will be suspended, so if you don't mind posting every so often you can have 150 Meg with 30 credits, or start with 20 Meg for 10 credits or posts.

Thank you so much! I was so confused before but you really helped me out a lot! 😃 Now I am going to take the time to actually learn PHP and customize the coding to fit my needs.

Hope you learn more, having a server at home to play with before you put your code up on the web is almost a requirement. Now you can test all kinds of code and change it without upsetting a working website, and if it goofs up then it is no big deal.

If you have more question in the future then you can come here to find out more, and if you see someone having the same problems you were having you will be able to help them.

HELP Please.... Sorry if im posting here.. But i dont really know how this will work... Im trying to learn PHP now..

Im a newbie in web design (HTML knowledge only)and almost Zero on php scripting. Can any one help me or give me a simple script for my sample database?

My database has 5 fields : "ID" - key and VAR1, VAR2, VAR3, VAR4

What i want to do is :

Have a 1 form field that would ask me to encode content of "VAR1" <<<<
after i press submit then

New page or same page will ECHO me contents of VAR1 and VAR2
and also ask me to encode/input for VAR3...

If my input in VAR3 is correct (there is a match between VAR1, VAR2 and VAR3 of one databse single entry) The database should show me the content of VAR4...

Please if anyone can give help/PHP script of this...

The page would look like

First PAGE > requests for a username "VAR1" and then submit.
2nd Page > with VAR1 Given, shows a question contained in VAR2
the user types an answer and this answer would be verified against VAR3.

If VAR1 VAR2 and VAR 3 matches then VAR4 will be shown to the user...

First you need to have a better table design than an id which if I get you right has a PRIMARY KEY of (id) but VAR1....VAR4 are not descriptive at all, are they VARCHAR, TEXT, INT or what type data. It really seems that if that is all there is to the database why not just use a script that uses variables or arrays. I guess what I am saying is that it is hard to tell just what you are trying to do, if you showed the database structur and the name and data types of your table it might help somehat.

I tried to use phprunner to generate my desired script but i guess the generated its too complicated to learn and start with.

I want a very simple script..

What im trying to do now is a very simple password reminder without encryption.

I changed the ID's as requested. Now i have this mysql script:
