[RESOLVED] I goofed something up

Hello everyone,

I'm sorry about the bad title, but I didn't know what to put there for this problem...

Old system:
- RH9
- php 4.2.2
- apache 2.0.40
- mysql 3.23.58 (empty, not used)

New system:
- FC2
- php 5.1.2 (I upgraded to this, I don't remember what it came with - possibly 4.4.2)
- apache 2.0.51
- mysql 4.1.16 (I upgraded to this from 3.23.58)

I upgraded the new system's php then mysql, followed by copying my web files from the old system to the new system. I built my old site, using what I would call intermediate level php.

Now that I've copied my php files to the new server, nothing is fed to the browser.

I don't know where to start or what to check to try to identify the problem(s) causing this issue. Can someone help point me in the right direction on what to look for?

Error in code probably.... or in the configuration file(s). Try setting the php error_reporting level to
E_ALL | E_STRICT
and see if that gives you errors on your screen. You'll also have to enable the "displayErrors" parameter to see them as well.

And try the very basic script (loaded into doc root)

In /etc/php.ini, I changed:
[INDENT]"error_reporting = E_ALL" to "error_reporting = E_ALL|E_STRICT"[/INDENT]
[INDENT]"display_errors = Off" to "display_errors = On"[/INDENT]

I placed the following code at: http://www.puppyfiles.us/test.php:

<?php
echo phpinfo();
?>

The blank page returned contained the following when viewed in the "view source":

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN"><html><head><title></title></head><body></body></html>

All of my code worked in php 4.2.2. Any ideas?

seems to me you don't have PHP installed properly.... Did you follow any tutorials or what? I get to that page, and it asks me to download the PHP....

Until you said that it looks like it was installed wrong, I had forgotten that I'd saved the command line that I used for the configuration:

./configure --with-apxs2=/usr/sbin/apxs --with-mysql --quiet --prefix=/usr --with-config-file-path=/etc/php.ini --with-config-file-scan-dir=/usr/bin --with-pear=/usr/share/pear

Also, I just remembered that I had problems with pear being the wrong/old version, so I updated it too.

I'm going to reinstall php and see if I have better luck...

I'll post my results after the reinstall...

I'm using the instructions at: http://us2.php.net/manual/en/install.unix.apache2.php:

Steps:
1. gzip -d httpd-2_0_NN.tar.gz (Skipped, not upgrading right now)
2. tar xvf httpd-2_0_NN.tar (Skipped, not upgrading right now)
3. gunzip php-NN.tar.gz (I downloaded php-5.1.2.tar.gz into /usr/src/rpms from http://us2.php.net/get/php-5.1.2.tar.gz/from/this/mirror then I did this step)
4. tar -xvf php-NN.tar (I did this step)
5. cd httpd-2_0_NN (Skipped, not upgrading right now)
6. ./configure --enable-so (Skipped, not upgrading right now and .so files are already enabled)
7. make (Skipped, not upgrading right now)
8. make install (Skipped, not upgrading right now)
[INDENT]Now you have Apache 2.0.NN available under /usr/local/apache2,
configured with loadable module support and the standard MPM prefork.
To test the installation use your normal procedure for starting
the Apache server, e.g.:
/usr/local/apache2/bin/apachectl start (I did this and was reminded that it was already running)
and stop the server to go on with the configuration for PHP:
/usr/local/apache2/bin/apachectl stop. (I did this step)[/INDENT]
9. cd ../php-NN (I did this step)
10. Now, configure your PHP. This is where you customize your PHP
with various options, like which extensions will be enabled. Do a
./configure --help for a list of available options. In our example

Hmm... sounds like you have a corrupt file maybe. Not really sure.... I'm not a linux guy myself (not yet at least)....

I just downloaded php-4.4.2.tar.gz and expanded it, configured it using the line I used above, did make and make install... Now my site is back up and running... I don't know what happened to the system when I tried php 5.1.2... Any ideas?

I suspect that my problem was that php5 is not compatable with Fedor Core 2. Does anyone know of a successful install of php5 on FC2?

Honestly, FC2 is so out of date, that I think php5 can not run on it. Your best bet is to either update to 4 (or 5 beta) and use php 5, or just deal with php 4.

Here's a FAQ page that seems to relate to your problem.

EDIT: PHP5 will work on FC3, doesn't look good for FC2 though.
