Record hits when a link is clicked

Gentle folk,
I would like to record the hits on a link to a word document.

I know how to record hits to a webpage in a table and all that. I'm just not sure how to call a function to record a hit when a document link is hit.

I thought javascript, but I don't know if I can call a php function from inside a javascript function.

Any thoughts?

don't link directly to the word doc. link to a script that records the hit then serves up the word doc using the [man]header[/man] function.

DOH--! I've done that. Not with a hit counter, but I've done that sort of thing. Thanks!
