How to represent a calendar in database?

What I want to do is represent a calander in my database. Their should be one entery for each day.

For example something along the lines of http://www.merenkov.com/calendar/try.htm

However short of having a entery in my table for every day of the year is their a better way to represent this structure in the database?

The only way I can think is to add say 1000 enteries in a table, each entery representing a day.

I'm not sure, but I don't think you are going to be very successful trying to create a calendar in a database.

The example you posted is an html file and the code behind it that makes it work is written in PHP.

If you go to the site and right click on the pop-up calendar and then click view source and save the code as an html file you will see that when you open it you have a view of the calendar. However, to make it actually work as a calendar to keep track of certain dates, etc. you would need to write the appropriate php code.

I think if you Google PHP Calendar you will find lots of sample code you can download.

Sorry if I didnt make it clear, yes I would be implementing the calander with php, displaying it in html/javascript, but I need some underlying way of representing the information in the database.

I think it is going to be rather difficult for anyone here to tell you how to design your database without know a lot more about your project.

If you want a field in your database for every day in the year then you are going to have at least 365 fields. However, it depends on what you are going to use the database for.

If it is for some type of day planner you might need to keep track of the hours within any given day. Or, if you are keeping track of rental cars then you may have several transactions for each day.

If you are just keeping some sort of personal diary about what took place each day then that is another situation. Maybe you would only need two fields such as date and activity.

Like I said, without knowing what it is you are trying to do I don't think there is much information anyone can give you that will be very helpful to you in designing your database.

You probably don't need to store anything in the database for the calendar itself, because it will have a fixed amount of days on. A day is a day, and you don't need any data to tell yourself that.

What you will want to do is store actual INTERESTING DATA in your database, i.e. appointments or events, which will presumably have a date (or typically datetime) field to say when they are.

Then you can find all the appointments on a day with something like

select * from appointments where start between '2006-02-15' and '2006-02-16'
