PHP Forums - Highlighting unread forum posts

Hi all,

I am the owner of www.ATBoarders.com, the whole site is coded from scratch and i want to keep it that way, with no inclusion of 3rd party code.

I want to add a feature to my forum where unread posts are highlighted in bold or something along those lines, I can see ways to do it but none of them are particulary efficient and are very resource hogging, does anyone have any suggestions?

I'm sure most boards just rely on my browsers own ability to differentiate visited from unvisited links - the posts - and apply text decoration through CSS: link, visited, hover, active. Puts all the burden on the client. Other than that you are going to have to track every user and apply style for every page request: very resource intensive indeed.
