Installation and what to do next. Step by step

Guyz Im new in PHP "newbie" and I want to learn it. 😕 I know a little bit about HTML but I need to know PHP to make my page dynamic

It says that fisrt I must have a (requirements) APACHE server, PHP , and mySQL to run it. So my friend told me that I should download

appserv because it contains all the 3.

So I download it AppServ 2.5.5, I started the Setup and choose Typical, Server name is localhost (default) <--- is that correct?

then Administrator's Email address, I use my own email add <-- is this also correct? 😕

then http port to 80, username: mysql, password mysql, charset: latin1

After installation there are 2 checkboxes witch is by default are true. start Apache and start sql. Then i click close to finish.

The service name is invalid.
Press any key to continue

The question is what should I do next? Why is it that the service name is invalid? Can I code php using only 1 pc? and at the same time

make this pc my server? How should I know if Apache and sql is running? Please help me. Thank you so much...

Usually Apache on a Windows is a service and also is MySQL, The server is itself a program so you can run Apache server as well as the MySQL on your local PC. Localhost is normally used as the default webserver so that is correct as well as the port of 80. If you installed the program with all the normal defaults it should start you Apache server, and somewhere it probably created an htdocs directory where you would put all your web documents. Try to let us know if you have a htdocs folder (directory) now installed on your server. Also have you read all the readme files if any?

Service name being invalid has nothing to do with the documents folder....

You messed something up during your Apache installation. When you install Apache HTTP Server, you don't need to worry about mySQL or PHP yet. Let's get your server running first.

Run the installer again. This time, when it asks: "Install as service for all users (Port 80)", make sure it's checked (you said it was, just double checking here). Then, localhost should the servername and domain name. Now, the email address is really invalid if you're not making this a production server. So put whatever you want as the email.

Then just let apache do its thing. When it says it's done, go to: http://localhost/ and see if it comes up with a nice little webpage that says "This is the default index page..." or something like that.

Once you get that far, then you start adding PHP and mySQL (in that order preferrably) and testing to make sure it's active along the way (with php just create a [man]phpinfo[/man] document).

The reason you get the error could be due to an incompatible operating system (like Windows Vista) for the installer. It is possible to run your "development" server, and code your websites all from the same computer. It just takes time to set up... (I'm crawling through the Linux setup now...)
