Replacing = with preg_replace

I am working with raw email. In email when a word of the body is to be continued on the next line, the word is truncated by =.

Hey, whats up? This is a sample txt message that should be saved as such! L=
ater

Where $body = the text above:

echo preg_replace('/=\n/', '', $body);

Results in:

Hey, whats up? This is a sample txt message that should be saved as such! L=ater

Its like its ignoring the =. I don't believe = is a special character. However I tried this with the same result:

echo preg_replace('/\=\n/', '', $body);

If you don't need regular expressions, use [man]str_replace/man

I believe I do, because I need to replace =\n not just any =.

I think I figured it out.... Stupid me. I am splitting the file by new lines so

Will actually be
