Hello eveybody!

I am relatively new to PHP and I have no knowledge of Javascript, but I think Javascript might be what I need
for a problem I have.
Well, say you have a PHP page with a form and the forms send a query in the Mysql database,
for example "SELECT name FROM employers WHERE salary > 5000";
The user is then presented with a page containing all the names from the query (this I have done).
What I also want to have is to give the user the ability to click on every person's name and see exactly the amount of salary he gets.
I thought of making an extra php script that would take the person's name as input (when the user clicked on the name) and then show the salary.
But I want to use pop-up window for this job, so I think Javascript is best for that...
Any hints on how to start? Basically I need some hints on how to get something fro a page and give it as input to Javasript to do the rest of the job...

do this man... make each person's name a link like this

<a href="#" title="$salary">$name</a>

-by making the "label" equal to the persons salary, when you hover over the name it will show as a tool-tip
-by making the "href" = to "#", when they click it, they will go no where

using javascript is just bulky and unnecessary... plus you have the whole pop-up blocker issue to tend with... this way is much easier and cleaner

IF you still wanted to go with the pop-up idea, you can simply do something like:

<a href="myscript.php?employer_id=$id" target="_blank">$name</a>

And javascript popups aren't that hard to do either:

It's as straight forward as it can be.

my only thought was if all he wanted was to display the salary using JS is over kill forone piece of data... a simple tool-tip is the EASIEST thing todo

Heck, the easiest thing to do yet would be to simply display the salary on the page along with the names in a separate column or something. That way, if they want to know the salary, they just look over one column or whatever.

EDIT: But yes, I do agree that using JS here is probably a little overkill. It's always a good practice to avoid depending on users not only having a client-side scripting language, but also expect it to behave as expected on their OS/browser AND assuming that they have it enabled and allowed.

There are so many ways to show stuff like that.

In the status bar? Easy! "window.status = 'John\'s Salary is $10000';"

In a div? Easy! <div id="show"></div> <a onmouseover="document.getElementById('show').innerHTML = 'Fred\'s Salary is $5001';">Fred</a>

And there are so many ways of doing it, the most simple being the <a title="Bob's Salary is $10">Bob</a>

And you can always include a <noscript>Salary: $5000000</noscript>
