Can't get session id to display

For some reason, I can't get the session id to display. I have tested sessions by setting a value in a session and that printed out just fine.

Help me.

I need the id for the backend. I have been trying the follwoing.

echo $PHPSESSID;
echo $_SESSION['PHPSESSID'];

[man]session_id/man;

Used like:

<?php
session_start();
$sess_id = session_id();

echo $sess_id;
?>

session_id() returns the session id for the current session or the empty string ("") if there is no current session (no current session id exists).
