[RESOLVED] Sorting db results on page

This is more of a inquiry on how would one go about this.

What I currently have is a page that displays the users that are registered for my web site. Currently I am querying the db, sorting the entires by the signup date and displaying them that way on the page. So, image I have Name, Address, City, Reg Date, etc. and underneath on a seperate row has the results; John Doe, 123 Main St., Somewhere, Feb. 25 , 2006 . blah blah - you get the idea.

I would like to take this one step further and have it where I could click on any of values on the top row such as the "Name" or "City" and have my displayed results reorder themselves on the same page. How would I do this? The easy way out for me, I would think (and correct me if I am wrong), is to just create indivual pages where I query the db and order the results by their respectful fieldsm, then do my loop through the results. I can post the code that I am using if this is helpful. Thanks.

U need to send through GET, name of your field u want to order by and wich type of order do u use (ASC or DESC) ...

Well, you could do all that in the browser with javascript, but I don't think that that is what you mean.

So, you are going to have to rerun the query with the new sort order. The easiest way to do this is to make each column heading into a url that calls back to the query page with an indicator for the desired sort order.

// set up an original sort order
$sort = 'ORDER BY reg_date';

// test if this is a resort call and recreate the order by clause if it is
if ($_GET['resort']) {
   $sort = 'ORDER BY ' . $_GET['resort'];
}

// now make the original query
$sql = "SELECT * FROM table WHERE reg=true " . $sort;

// that will now sort as required

// then in your html output, and I'm guessing at your layout
echo '<th><a href="http://www.mydomain.com/members.php?resort=name>Name</a></th>';
echo '<th><a href="http://www.mydomain.com/members.php?resort=city>City</a></th>';
 // etc

One thing, reviewing my code, I'd change it to

// test if this is a resort call and recreate the order by clause if it is
if (isset($_GET['resort'])) {
   $sort = 'ORDER BY ' . $_GET['resort'];
}

A better coding practice and less likely to throw an error.
