shopping cart/upload feature

Abstract

I have been asked by a client to do an e-comm site - and it will be my first at this kind.

They provide printing services and would like a shopping cart where a customer would select "post card" for purchase, and in the form, include a spot where they can upload or attach their file to be printed.

I have been told that PHP scripting can do this - but since I am new to this side of programming, I am not sure of what terms I should be looking for in templates to purchase that will do what I need. :queasy:

Can anyone direct me the right way? I know I could pay someone to create the site, but I would love the challenge and experience.

Alternatively, if there is another way to do it so that a person's purchase and upload could go hand-n-hand, I am open to suggestions.

you have two good ways:
store the cart info on the cookie
store the cart info on the session

i'd suggest a session so you would have to store something like this

session_start ();

$product['id'] = $_POST['product_id'];
$product ['qty'] = $_POST['product_qty'];

$_SESSION['cart'][] = $product;

add a form that will direct to a page containing this code and it should work. the $_SESSION vars will be available in any page you put session_start() on

as for uploading, the official php site PHP.net has a manual containing an easy-to-understand upload example that might be a very good start

the above link shows you how to set up the html and php part so you can upload files to the server. Im now an expert at this lol, and I have my own uploader, which if you want, you can see at http://tenfold.ath.cx:8000/upload/ but if you go to it and it doesnt load, then my server probably isnt on right then. you can contact me on AIM and I can show you my source for my uploader. It has a solid backup for max file size, and only allows certain extensions that are easily set in another text file called whitelist.txt. you know, hot to make forms right? (even if you don't, a graphical html editor might do it for you) then just create a field in it called product_id to tell whith product is being bought and a product_qty to tal how many. and add that code in the page the form will be submitted to.

and in any page you startup with the function session_start() you'll be able to do this (lets assume there's a function productname() which returns the name of a product of the given id):

   echo productname ($product['id']) .' - '.$product['qty'].'<br>';
}
