Code Causing Server Problems

Hi, i recently had my web site suspended twice because it was supposedly causing high loads and causing the server to crash.

I have no idea why my code would do this or how it would.

Does anyone have any experience of this problem that they could help with, i can't access my code at the moment because it has been suspended but i could try and get any information you need to help me out if necessary.

it's impossible to find out what's wrong with yout code without knowing what's in it...

but in advance what could cause server crashes is usually infinite loops or high database processing

i'm not sure if i have any infinite loops, but i know that i use alot of mysql commands which could be the source of the problem

And have you got a development server on a local machine? If you haven't you are asking for it.

what do you mean by a local development server?

i'll try and free the site so i can access the code and post some so we can see just how many it uses.

Your own computer.

another possobility is that you're serving more pages than you expect. Check your stats, how many page displays do you have - your site maybe very popular or may be suffering a DDOS attack.

shouldnt the server be able to cope with lots of page requests? its hard to see how one website can cause their server to crash so many time sin a day

It's not just the page requests, it's what the pages are doing when they're requested. I wrote a page that displayed the top 20 in a member referral competition, started out absolutely fine with 4000 members, when that got to 250,000 it was taking 30 seconds to do the query, with loads of people wanting to know if they're winning... disaster, so you end up caching the result and running the real query once per hour.

Are you generating any sort of stats at all, especially on a table that needs indexing?

i have a rating system for games and animations thats about the only thing stats wise.

i'm not sure if it needs indexing, i cant access it at the minute.

What I meant was, can you see how many people a day are accessing your site? Could those numbers be bigger than anticipated?
