Dates not resolving ... Help, time critical!

I incorporated a hidden date() field into a form.

In the form handler, I added a datestamp to any uploaded filenames to make them unique. ie, $stamp = date(mdHis);

The datestamps usually don't match in the database. In one case there is 8-something hours difference (the user is 1 timezone over).

How is this possible? Is the hidden date taken from the user's computer or server. It's important to know because there is a deadline cutoff involved.

why bother doing any of this client side at all? when a file is uploaded simply prepend the current unix timestamp to the filename:

$filename = time() . '_' . $_FILES['name']

this gives the added benefit of having all of the filenames chronologically sorted

I did the prepend thing, actually, and it was useful (especially since everyone's file was called my_application.doc).

But I left in the hidden field in the form nevertheless.

I believe that the prepended date comes from our server and that the final application actually arrived after the deadline (I took the form down but he must've had the webpage open still).

... but I need to confirm that the hidden variable comes from the client's computer/server like other hidden variables. I can't actually find any evidence to this effect.
