Never can get mysql to work with php

About a year ago, i tried to upgrade my php4 installation to php5, after finding out that the mysql isnt included and having soo many screwed up problems trying to install the modules I gave up (3 days in a row).... and returned to php4.

Ive tried again today, spent 5 hours on it, its the same error you've all heard before, cannot load the php_mysql.dll module.... And believe me I have searched long and hard on google, php forums, php.net for answers.... and there are answers but none of them work for me...

All my .dlls are in the right place... ive checked 10 times (no joke).

WINDOWS IIS
PHP 5
MySQL 5.0

Ive set the extension_dir = "c:\php\ext" which is valid and place the c:\php root in the environment variables path AND put the LIBRARY (libmysql.dll) file in the system32 folder...

No matter what though, it never works, same old error and I am totally confused...

I've often wondered how riddiculous the seperation of the mysql library is, and what a farce it is, Im saying this because soo many users have had the same problem but somehow they have solved it??

What I also dont understand is, how linux users are given the option to -WITH-MYSQL ... meaning it binds the library... why are windows users left pondering about?

I appreciate any tips and hints, if they dont work, I guess I will have to install Linux instead and take advantage of the -with-mysql option... as I am desperate to start learning OOP in PHP5.

One thing, make sure you're editing the active php.ini. I once spent a couple days editing php.ini in c:\php only to find out there was another php.ini in c:\windows that was the active file. phpinfo() will tell you.

Other than that, I've had no problems using php5/mysql5/iis5.1 on XP. I installed PHP as an ISAPI rather than using the installer.

Good news is, i got it all to work, abandoned IIS, used apache instead... worked first time, soo wish I ditched IIS years ago.

I tried the IIS with PHP and MySQL a few years ago, but really didn't like the server and then went to Apache and have been using it ever since, just because IIS is on your machine don't mean you have to use it or that it is worth using. Apache is the most popular web server in the world and with great support it is much better, Windows is too busy building new version of an OS to keep people getting patches and updates for years to come.

Apache or lighthttpd are the better choices. More stable and less vunerablilities than IIS. Why choose a webserver you know will be targetted more by attackers?
