Can the php letters be removed from the browser address bar

Is there a way to remove the 'php' letters from the ending of the address displayed in the address bar of the browser?

Only the server's defined default page will load without a page name (index.htm, index.html,default.asp,index.php, etc.). I suppose you could create a cgi-bin family of code to do that or create a separate folder for each page with a default php page then just call the correct folder, but hardly worth the effort.

And you are right, it would not be worth the effort to create separate directories for each page and have a default page in each directory.

I had searched quite a bit before making my post, and the posting was jut a last effort attempt so I could report back to those who were asking me to do this and tell them that it can't be done. It's really more of a visual thing that they are after, for some reason wanting to mask the extension of the page being rendered.

If you wanted and had access to the web server, you could change the extension that the web server recognized for a PHP page. That is you could make them *.kjs extentions and then tell the web server to use the PHP engine for .kjs extensions.

No, I wouldn't be able to do that because I don't have access to the web server itself, it's in a shared hosted environment and out of my physical possession.

To do anything like this you would need some control over the server, since it is the responsibility of the server to match resources to URLs. Have a talk with whoever is in control and see if you can arrange something with them.

The way I have my Apache server setup at home is that it automagically figures out the file extension. I can point my browser to http://localhost/mytest and it automatically loads the mytest.php file I have in the root. It also works for GIFs, HTML, pretty much any file extension.

Now, I don't remember what config I changed to make it do this, so if anyone would care to enlighten me... that'd be great! :p

You should look into Apache's Mod_Rewrite

Then, if you can enable the mod rewrite engine add the following line to your ht access file

RewriteRule ^{([a-zA-Z0-9_]+)/?$} $1.php [L]

What this will do is allow you to have somthing like

www.site.com/page1 and will turn it into www.site.com/page1.php

it will do this, for every page you call after the / and match it with the correct php file in the directory

the [L] on the end of the line, tells apache to stop scanning the htaccess file if a rulematch is found.
