Mysql_fetch_row

Ok, so I'm making a private messagging system for an online game. anyway, and now I've been sitting for 4 hours trying to work this out.

So here's the code:

	$sql_messages = "SELECT * FROM pms WHERE to_id='$uid' && folder='$folder'"; 
	$res_messages = mysql_query($sql_messages);

$message_data = array();
while( $row = mysql_fetch_row($res_messages) )
{
	$message_data[] = $row;
}

and here's the problem: nothing is written into the $message_data array...

Does anyone have a suggestion?

Does anyone have a suggestion?

Can you get interpolation of the php variables $uid and $folder while enclosed in single quotes?

They're enclosed in double quotes.

Looks like single quotes to me. The Select statement is double quoted.

Definitely check out the debugging tips in the linked thread, [man]mysql_error/man can give you useful information.

I don't know if it's in the thread, so I'll just say it now - if you find that MySQL isn't giving you any errors, echo out the query and copy-paste it into either the CLI or a GUI such as phpMyAdmin... see if you get any results returned.

The advice was intended to help. One can listen or disregard it.

But the manual says single quoted strings are not interpolated and are treated as literals. That holds true even when enclosed within double quoted containers.

To me that also means that the reference to the $variables will not be recognized as a variable reference.

That, in turn, would result in an incorrect select statement which would also cause the kind of problem that was experienced.

I'd appreciate it if you could set me straight on why you think this is incorrect.

That's correct, at least if I correctly understand what you are trying to say.

That's incorrect. Variable interpolation always occurs in a double quote delimited string where such substitution is valid.

You are right on target, and I was mistaken. The Select statement published is correct.
