The advice was intended to help. One can listen or disregard it.
But the manual says single quoted strings are not interpolated and are treated as literals. That holds true even when enclosed within double quoted containers.
To me that also means that the reference to the $variables will not be recognized as a variable reference.
That, in turn, would result in an incorrect select statement which would also cause the kind of problem that was experienced.
I'd appreciate it if you could set me straight on why you think this is incorrect.
