update without delete

If i get a user to fill in a form that will update acurrent record, the user may leave a field blank, if field is not manditory, when you do an update, the blank field will over write the current data if there was any, is there a way round this?

1. Build the SQL statement based on the non-empty form elements. This way you only set the fields for which the form elements have been filled in.

2. Generate the form with the data from the existing record. This way the unmodified fields will get updated with their original values (so nothing has really changed for them).
