Upload files without browsing... can I?

Hello,

I have written a CMS that allows my customer (a wall tiles vendor) to update his list of products (decorated tiles), then he can enter/modify/delete the products info, as well upload its pictures.

Ok, here is the problem. Each product have two pictures: the regular one that I named with the product code and its thumbnail that I gave the same name but added an underscore char at the beggining.

Then it's like that:
product code: 123456
product picture: 123456.jpg
product thumbnail: _123456.jpg

Currently, my customer need to browse his HD and select the both pictures (main one and thumbnail), and it's too annoying as he have dozens of products to input everyday.

Once I know where these pictures are in his HD and know that its names are the code of produt, I would like to know how to upload'em directly without the needing to browse the files.

Something like:

$prodim = "c:\pictures\" . $prodcode . ".jpg";
$prodthumb = "c:\pictures_" . $prodcode . ".jpg";

Then upload the pictures pointed by the two vars above.

Make sense?

no, i dont think its possible.

if his files are always

productcode.jpg
or _productcode.jpg

why not just the script which checks folder which he ftp's the files to?

I don't think this is possible because of the huge security risk. Imagine what could happen if you are allowed to do this, you can easily create a script to download files from the users pc without their knowledge.

If you need to upload mulitple files then your best solution would probably be to use a java upload applet http://jupload.sourceforge.net/ which allows you to select and upload a whole directory.

As esukf said, it's too risky. That's why the input type "file" doesn't accept the "value" attribute.

Oh, I see. Then absolutelly there is NO way.
Seems that my customer will need to keep browsing his files - LOL.
I just didnt want to tell him "it's not possible" without to be absolutelly sure.

Why not make it so the client only uploads one image and then use GD2 to dynamically create and save the thumbnail with the right sze and filename? That would at least save you client a lot of time (and reduce the chance of wrong images being uploaded that could break the page).

Your idea is good, and I really had thought about that. The problem is that do not exists a fixed size ration between the regular pic and the thumbnail. Because the orientation of the pics, sometimes it have variations, then that's why we cannot automate the thumb creation.

The only other option involves the use of scp (secure copy) or sftp to transfer the files at once, and use GD related functions to generate thumbnails (or exif_thumbnail()).
