cookies v.s. sessions im confused..help plz

which is better to use in logins...cookies or sessions...im really confused because im just new to this things and when i try to read some tutorials... some would say sessions... and some would say cookies... but from u guys who have been working quite some time based on your exp. which is better and why? 🙂

sessions have some security advantages in that the data is stored on the server rather than the client. be advised that these two concepts are not mutually exclusive: for example the default method of session propagation is thru cookies. specifically the session ID is stored in a cookie that maps to a session file on the server.
