While Loop Help

Hey Everyone,

I am just getting started with some PHP/MySQL work and have come to a roadblock.

I am going to be working on sites for bands and I want them to be able to update their site with their all their album information…

I set up two tables in my database one for the albums and one for the tracks

Albums :
Album_id
Album_title

Tracks :
Track_id
Track_album_id (this will go with the Album_id in the Albums table)
Track_title

What I’d like to do is display on a page the albums with the corisponding tracks below them like so…

My First Album
Track 1
Track 2
Track 3

My Second Album
Track 1
Track 2
Track 3
Track 4

I am pretty sure I should be using a while loop but cant figure out how to set that up so that if any new albums/tracks are added they will automatically be set up on the page.

Any help is extremely appreciated!

Do you presently have some code? A while loop would be one method ia schemata of your database might help also, then maybe someone could help. Right now we have an abstract idea but not much else, and there are plenty that are great working with database design, and plenty that are very good with php also and or both on this site, just need a little to work with.

Well I think I've got a solution. I've only had time for a little investigation so there is probably a lot that can be improved and probably someone will come along with a more elegant solution. But for the time being here is what I've come up with.

Remember that you'll need to change the querys to what ever you want to select from the tables and also the database name.

$rs=mysql_select_db('mymusic') or die('could not connect to mymusic db');

$Albumquery = 'SELECT albumId from ALBUMS;';

$Albumresult = mysql_query($Albumquery, $db) or die('could not do the query');

while( $album_row = mysql_fetch_array( $Albumresult ) ) {

	$album = $album_row['albumId'];
	print "<b>Album Id ".$album."</b><br />";

	$trackQuery = "SELECT * FROM TRACKS WHERE ALBUMID = $album;";
	$trackResult = mysql_query($trackQuery, $db);


	while($track_row = mysql_fetch_array( $trackResult )) {
		print $track_row['trackId']."<br />";
	}

}

You also probably want the information in an html table for display but I'm sure you'll figure it out.

No problem.

Keep an eye on this thread though as I'm not an expert and I have a funny feeling there will be a better way to do it.
