Unable to connect PHP 5 and MySQL 5

Is this really possible. I've tried on two different systems. Both windows but I haven't found any information on the actual linkage. I've decided to stick with the newer MySQL and an older version of PHP (4.3) but would like info on this link.

What is the best combination of PHP/MySQL/Apache?

Does the sticky thread in this forum on getting the two to work together not help? what exact problems are you having? Error messages and stuff like that.
