big database entries - splitting

I know there are some ways to get what I want, but I don't have enough knowledge about php to decide whats the best, fastest, easiest ..

I have a database with over 250 big text files (sometimes, 5 A4 pages if you'd print them)
all are in fields and I have full access to them.
For now, I call them when I need them in my site, but as you can see these are quiet big. Not for the site or space, but for people staying focussed or reading and reading.

THEREFOR, I want to split them (live and dynamical, so it stays one text in the database) when I call them and generate pages, like

<--- view prev page || view next page --->

I would love to split the text at a certain amount of paragraphs.

Perhaps you should consider XML to markup the paragraphs and split points.

thanks for the reply, but I dont know how to work with XML on that level, I think there will be alot of work involved.

I know I can work with eregi, split things, but that lets me split at a certain amount of words/chars.
What if he splits somewhere in the middle of a <ul> block? html code will be messed up no?

So is it easily to add like a mark point in the texts myself, lets say some thing like

##PAGEEND## (in the htmlcode, somewhere in the text file, at every place I want to break the page)
and then render the page and break it at those points at put every point in an array element?
or is it not fast enough (+/- 50 visitors online every minute calling that script)
