I have a table where i have different cities.. with long / lat
the thing is.. i have one field giving the place name.. and anotherone giving the overall cityname..
In the past i was using this query using the place names:
Select id, placename FROM cities
WHERE country='AT'
Order by placename ASC
works fine..
but now.. as the list is growing I only want the cityname and not the placename!
Problem.. there are several placenames in each city..
ID - Placename - cityname
1 - Vienna harbour - Vienna - lat - long - AT
2 - Vienna cathedral - Vienna - lat - long - AT
are 2 records...
if I do a :
Select id, cityname FROM cities
WHERE country='AT'
Order by cityname ASC
I get 2 times vienna.. thats obvious..
I tried a :
Select DISTINCT cityname, id FROM cities
WHERE country='AT'
Order by cityname ASC
I still get the 2 entries... (probably because the id is different..) the problem is, I need the id..
What I want.. is only one time vienna.. and i dont care which one of the two..
Anybody any ideas?
