When running a .shtml file <?php does not work. How can I get this to work??

you must configure your web server to parse .shtml for PHP code. how that is done exactly depends entirely on which web server you are running.

i CAN NOT FIND THAT OUT FOR A WHILE.. can you please give me some examples

no. not without knowing which web server you are using. if you do not administer you server contact the person(s) who does and ask them. furthermore ask them if you even have to permission to alter file handlers.

common webserver include apache and IIS. both have comprehensive documentation.
