Root, links, folders, includes... oo err

Right, this might be down to me being a tard, or it might be because ive hardly slept the last few days. Been doing loads of programmings for uni and of my personal website.

This is my problem and as simple as it is, I cant for the life of me remember what to do.

Folder structure:

/root/page1/
/root/includes/includeMe.php
/root/subsection/page2

Right, i want to do an include on page1 for the includeMe.php file.

easy : require_once(./includes/includeMe.php);

Now i want to do it in page2... i cant figure out how to direct it to that path. I just keep thinking of '~/' at the start to take you to the root. but it doesnt work.

I think you just need a dot-dot-forwardSlash (../)

so, try: require_once(../includes/includeMe.php);

That works, however, double dots just tells it to drop down a directory.

I was hoping for a way to point at the base directory (public_html) so that i can reference it from whever i want and it makes my program more versatile to changes etc. say i move a folder into another etc. it still works.
