is it possible to make a file so that it can only be included in another file and if its attempted to be accessed directly it will just fail?

or is there a way i can make a folder like this, so say it can only be accessed by php not the public.

store the file in a password protected directory (htaccess)
change the file's permissions to non world readable
store the file outside of your server's document root

option #3 is the most secure

what CHMOD does PHP require so it can still have access?
PHP can see files not in the public_html folder? :o

there are several example sites here
whatever user the PHP process is running as (ask your server admin)
PHP can see any files that the user it is running as has priviledges to see

Put it in a directory (say "Include") which is protected by Apache from being accessed directly. This can be done with Apache if .htaccess is enabled with

Deny From All

when i tried this last night it didnt even let php include the files.
