Cron and email

Does anyone know if it is better to run a cron job to send to my memberships. I am thinking if I have 2500 members, then using cron would be best to send off emails.
I would take emails from database.

Can anyone give advice on this and if you have any code that I can work from would be great.
I am thinking on the line of it getting like 100 address's email and then sleep for so long and start from where it left off and repeat that until all emails are sent.

Anyone got any ideas or code to help me out. PLEASE...

One thing I dont need is the server going down, or sendmail freaking on me.

Your best bet is to record for each newsletter job which receipients you've sent to. Then if you find that the server fails part way through, the cron job can restart where it left off, and few (if any) people will get two copies of the newsletter.
