Variables through url as /variable

Ok, been out of the PHP world for a year now. Trying to make myself get back into it before I lose all my coding knowledge 😃
I remember a website along time ago that showed how to retrieve variables through the url as subfolders/subdomains. Like whatever.com/folder. You could take /folder and turn that into a variable. Curious if anyone knows how, or knows of a site that explains this. I have searched and couldn't find anything. Thanks for any help.

$_GET data? As in www.url.com?get=variable ?

That's actually something that's unique to Apache.

Or wait! mod_rewrite could do that! I'm not exactly certain of how you do that, I just tried a few ways to no avail, but a search in Google for mod_rewrite will definitely turn up how to do it.

Is that what you found before?

RewriteRule ^([^/]+)$ /myScript.php?var=$1

Something like that should redirect http://www.mysite.com/news to http://www.mysite.com/myScript.php?var=news .

I have a question that goes the other way from this. Say if i have index.php?id=11 but i want the actual text result of it to say like index.php/This_Picture_Gallery...how would i do that?

RewriteRule ^index.php?id=([^&]+)$ index.php/$1

I'm not sure how you went from an ID of 11 to "This_Picture_Gallery" so you'll have to provide a better example if that's not what you're looking for... or just try modifying the code yourself... If you can't get it, start a new thread.
