Absolutely Newbie - Text PHP question

Okay folks, please don't laugh, as I am very, very green with PHP.

I have a "contract" with a company that wishes to supply me with text files. Within these files, there is obviously information that I need to "gather" and "decipher", thus implementing PHP variables within it. So therefore there may be as little as one variable that I need to add, to maybe over 50.

These files will probably be updated no less than twice per day. So my question is, how hard would it be to put these PHP variables in these text documents, assuming that these documents don't change their format.

Example of received document:

apple_4a 78.97 68.97
apple_4b 79.95 67.03

Example of what I would like to see happen:
$apple4a = "apple_4a 78.97 68.97";
$apple4b = "apple_4b 79.95 67.03";

As you can see, I would need to add the variable to lines that I need it added to, plus of course be able to "format" each line for proper PHP use / Flash use.

Any help on this would be wonderful. Thank you.

Honestly I'm not quite sure what you meant. Is this close?

$file = trim (file_get_contents ('./doc.txt'));
$file = explode ("\r\n", $file);

foreach ($file as $v) {
	$line = explode (' ', $v, 2);
	$buffer .= '$' . $line[0] . ' = "' . $v . '";' . "\r\n";
}

$open = fopen ('./phpfile.php', 'w');
fwrite ($open, trim ($buffer));
fclose ($open);

Can you explain to me where you got this line from?

$open = fopen ('./phpfile.php', 'w');

I understand the format, I just don't understand where you picked up the "phpfile.php" file from. Is this the name of the PHP file you presented in your reply?

That filename there will be the name of the file that you want to write the PHP code to. You can write it to a text file if you want:

$open = fopen ('./phpcode.txt', 'w');

Thanks for the speedy reply. When I implement this, I get this error:

Fatal error: Call to undefined function: file_get_contents()

Any ideas?

Oh no. 🙁 It means you are using an older version of PHP.

Instead, replace that line with:

$file = trim (implode ("\r\n", file ('./doc.txt')));
