Abyss Webserver

I think there's a solution to all those Windows users who can't get Apache and PHP up and running properly on their machine.

Aprelium Technologies created the Abyss webserver. It runs has the ability to run ASP.Net and PHP side by side. It's easy to set up on Linux, Mac, and of course Windows. It installs in a flash, and is easy to configure.

It uses PHPs CGI interface, so not so sure how it will fair on all apps, but for quick & dirty testing, it's really good.

Any thoughts?

Simce i don't touch ASP, i use wamp and phpdev to get php and apache on my windows box, but lately i moved to Ubuntu Linux which was surprisingly easy to set up apache, php and so on

I am sticking to good ol' Apache webserver.

For two other good web servers that run on windows well, and support PHP (I don't know about ASP, as I avoid it) look at xitami and lighttpd

I thought lighttpd didn't actually support too many modules.... or at least not as vast as Apache.....

Eh... Abyss integrates a lot easier with PHP-cgi than Lighttpd does....

I switched from Apache to Lighty a few months ago and haven't looked back. Lighty has a fraction the modules Apache has, and some seem like they're in the proof of concept phase (like WebDAV), but this hasn't been a problem for me so far.

But I mostly use Lighty to proxy requests to other servers that serve Rails (like Mongrel). Rails people seem to be switching to Pound, Pen, and other load balancers instead of Lighty.

I used xitami to run php in the past, and it was WAY simple to setup to run php. I haven't used lighttpd on windows (having no windows boxes in my life anymore) so yeah, I can't really speak to ease of installation.

performance wise though, I've heard nothing but praise.

I don't know.... the site seems kind of out of date.... I see that it's version 2.5c2, but don't know when the last build was.... nor does it show build dates... 🙁

Site copyright is 2003. Version in FreeBSD ports is 2.4c7, and was built (hold on now) April 1, 2000 (maybe they're pretty serious, though ;-) ). Last revision on all sourcefiles in src/smt is 1997, 1998, and 1999.

Of course, maybe no one's bothered to try and haxor it, eh? But it appears development is in a coma, at least.

xitami.com does seem to be running in xitami, though, although imatix (parent company) is on Apache/Solaris....
